Registered nursing jobs account for the largest health occupation in the United States with the Bureau of Labour Statistics putting the figure at close to two and half million jobs. It also expects nursing job opportunities to grow at a rate faster than the average for other professionals through to the end of this decade.
Nursing is based on science and technology combined with art of caring and compassion. Working collaboratively with other healthcare fields, nurses are involved in roles ranging from direct patient care to case management, establishing nursing practice standards, developing quality assurance procedures, and directing complex nursing care systems.
Nurses account for the biggest single component of hospital staff, usually about 60 percent of the total number of staff. They also responsible for most of the delivery of home health care. With more nurses than ever reaching retirement age, and an increasing aging population, the demand for nursing care is expecting to increase leading to an increase in nursing in nursing jobs.
Nursing jobs are available in a variety of settings including hospitals, private practices, public health agencies, primary care clinics, home health care, outpatient centers, health maintenance organizations, insurance companies, nursing homes, schools, hospices, the military, and industry.
To get into nursing, one must graduate from an approved nursing program and obtain a license by passing a licensing exam. Upon graduation nurses can undertake training for a career path in the advanced practice nursing specialties which are clinical nurse specialists, nurse anesthetists, nurse midwives, and nurse practitioners.
