Career OverviewThe Medical Equipment Preparer is an example of a very important medical function that patients rarely see. It is the responsibility of this person to assure that a wide range of medical equipment is working properly and is sterile.
A Medical Equipment Preparer examines equipment to detect leaks, worn or loose parts or other indications of disrepair. This person also disinfects and sterilizes equipment such as respirators, hospital beds, wheel chairs, oxygen and dialysis equipment using cleansing and sterilization solutions. This employee operates and maintains steam autoclaves, keeps records of tasks completed and maintenance procedures performed.
Tasks also include organizing and assembling routine and specialty instrument trays and other sterilized supplies as requested. Also, the medical equipment preparer installs and sets up equipment using hand tools and assembles and repairs electronic and electromechanical equipment.
This job may require sitting or standing for long periods at work tables or stations. The rooms in which these tasks are performed must be clean, well lit, and dust free. Proper ventilation is critical, because electrical and electronic assemblers often are in contact with soldering fumes. It is not unusual for this employee to wear protective clothing, because of the hazard of exposure to disease from the equipment on which the work is being performed. New developments in ergonomics have greatly improved working conditions through changes in work station and tool design.
Like any other work in the health care field, there is some exposure to disease, toxic chemicals, and body fluids. The medical equipment preparer must take the necessary safety precautions at all times. Generally a medical equipment preparer will work standard office hours and will need to be able to communicate effectively with co-workers and team members.

Career RequirementsDepending upon the level of complexity and supervision required, the requirements for medical equipment preparer may vary. The minimum education required for an entry level position is a high school diploma. Some medical equipment preparers may be working on a Bachelors degree in a medical health field and simply gaining experience working within a hospital or healthcare facility.
A medical equipment preparer should also have basic mechanical and electrical skills needed to repair equipment and keep the area in good repair. Problem solving skills and good organizational skills are also required.
