Service Line Manager - Career Profile

Career Overview

A service line manager is a front line individual that oversees the day-to-day services provided to patients in various areas of the hospital or healthcare facility. The service line manager reports to the chief executive officer or management team regarding any concerns or problems with the level of services that are provided as patients and their families are admitted, treated and discharged from the hospital or healthcare facility.

The service line manager works with service line managers in other departments to ensure the flow and continuity of services in both the clinical and non-clinical departments of the hospital or facility.

The service line manager needs to have a complete understanding of the services that the hospital provides and the level of standards that they strive for. The service line manager will assist with setting protocols and procedures to ensure that this level of care is maintained for the duration of each patients stay.

The service line manager works with the management team to set both short and long term goals for patient care, monitors individual staff performance and overall department performance, sets objectives and procedures as well as monitors and reports on the achievement of the set guidelines and practices.

The service line manager usually works standard business hours but may be required to complete some evening or weekend shifts, especially in larger hospitals and healthcare facilities. The service line manager should have good communication skills and ability to attend to more than one task at the same time. He or she should be aware of current nursing and medical treatment trends as well as understand hospital management and policy development.



Career Requirements

Since the service line manager must have work experience within a hospital or healthcare facility is this usually the most important requirement. Often a combination of education and work experience is requested although options for variations do exist in most hospitals and healthcare facilities.

Most service line manager positions require a Bachelors degree in nursing or certification as a RN as well as the candidate must hold a current nursing license within the state. Experience in management, staffing, budget and policy and procedure development is an asset in this career.

Job Outlook

The demand for service line managers will continue to remain steady for the next several years. Since this is a position that requires experience some service line managers move into other management positions that creates vacancies. In addition new hospitals and healthcare facilities opening in both rural and urban locations has lead to an increasing demand for qualified individuals.


Career Track

Service line managers can move into department or unit manager positions or become hospital administrators. Some service line managers move into specialization areas working with human resources or as medical director for the various units or wards in the hospital or healthcare facility.


Compensation

Most service line manager will earn between $49,000 and $63,000 per year, with the top 10% of those holding the position earning in excess of $80,000. Usually the top ten percent are service line managers with extensive training and experience that work in large hospital or healthcare facilities.
