Career OverviewThe major responsibilities of a public relations manager is to communicate and advertise to the public using a variety of types of media to promote the hospital or healthcare facility. The public relations manager should be a very creative thinking individual with excellent knowledge of the services offered by the hospital or healthcare facility an idea on how to creatively promote these programs within the community.
A public relations managers may be required to attend community fairs, speak on radio or television, design copy ads for newspapers or brochures or promote the hospital or healthcare facility in other ways. The public relations manager often designates and manages a small or large team of public relations workers so should also have management skills and some experience with budgets, staff management and financial issues.
The public relations manager works as part of the management team to help share relevant information about new projects or expansions with the public. The public relations manager may also have to answer questions relating to overall operation of the hospital or respond to questions or issues regarding the hospital if they become new stories or events.
A public relations manager needs to be very clear in providing information and should be aware of the various issues such as information sharing laws and regulations as well as issues regarding public sharing of various aspects of the hospital business. Excellent communication skills and a strong background working in a public relations and healthcare position is usually strongly desired.

Career RequirementsA public relations manager usually has an experience requirement plus a minimum of a Bachelors degree in a liberal arts field. The various programs that are considered for public relations managers include business, arts, journalism, sociology or even psychology may be acceptable. Additional classes in employment law, business management, advertising and media productions are considered to be beneficial.
