Marketing Director - Career Profile

Career Overview

The marketing director has the responsibility of planning and coordinating the marketing strategy for the hospital or healthcare facility. This may include establishing new markets, developing new client bases and determining the styles and themes of advertising to attract new and existing clients, staff and patients.

The marketing director will be responsible for preparing reports both on his or her facility as well as competing hospitals or healthcare facilities in the area that may be marketing to the same patients or doctors.

The marketing directors in hospitals or healthcare facilities may also be responsible for ensuring patient and referring doctor satisfaction. This is usually done in conjunction with the healthcare manager and customer service manager. Marketing directors also work closely with business and financial analysts that are providing information to the hospital on market expansion and development.

A marketing director must be very self-motivated and willing to work long hours, evening and weekends. Often the marketing director may be required to travel to other hospitals or healthcare facilities to discover new or innovative techniques that they may be using to increase their client base. The marketing director is aware of current and predicted trends in the hospital industry and is able to read and interpret financial reports, market trends and short and long term financial goals.

A marketing director requires above average communication skills both in verbal and written form. He or she should be able to use and analyze financial data as well as share this information in meaningful ways with a variety of stakeholders and management teams. He or she should be very comfortable working in team situations both in a participant and leader role.

Career Requirements

Most marketing directors will have either a Bachelors level or a Masters level education in marketing, usually in business administration. Ideally some background in hospital or healthcare facility work is advantageous but not always required.

Specific understanding of corporate laws, economics, financial management or accounting is usually helpful for candidates entering the field. Many experienced marketing directors continue their education to keep abreast of current trends and requirements in the field.

Some marketing directors, especially those with Masters degrees or higher, may choose to start their own business and provide either contract services or consulting services to multiple hospitals or healthcare facilities at the same time.

Compensation

Most marketing directors earn a standard pay rate plus a bonus that is often very significant. Usually the bonus is calculated based on the success of the various market campaigns. The average salary for a marketing director in the United States is just slightly over $87,000 prior to bonuses.
