Human Resources Manager - Career Profile

Career Overview

A human resources manager is responsible for overseeing human resources generalists as they provide services to employees of the hospital or healthcare facility. A human resources manager also provides training and in-services for new staff or works with existing staff to understand new protocols, laws and regulations as they relate to labor laws and other related topics.

The human resources manager should have an excellent understanding of the responsibilities of the human resources generalist or staff member and should be able to help with difficulties, answer complex or detailed questions, and find relevant information to assist department staff in their jobs.

Often the human resources manager works with a committee of managers or employees to develop effective and easy to understand employee handbooks, brochures, and other forms of information. The human resources manager is responsible for the operation of the human resources department including staffing and training. Often the human resources manager works with senior management in hiring decisions especially in low or mid-level management positions.

The human resources manager assists in making decisions on various aspects of the human resources services including insurance coverage, benefits, expectations and even termination of employees. The human resources manager may have formal training in mediation or negotiation and may assist in resolving employee disputes or complaints prior to litigation.

The human resources manager is also responsible for helping management identify and select employees that are most closely suited to the department or hospitals or healthcare facilities needs.

Career Requirements

A human resources manager usually requires the minimum of a Bachelors and preferably a Masters education in labor relations, business management, personnel, hospital or healthcare management or a related field. In addition training in labor law, mediation or negotiation skills, law or finance may also be beneficial.

Most human resources managers have to also have several years working as human resources generalists or within the personnel management field. A background in medical sciences or experience working within a hospital or healthcare facility is also desirable.

Some human resources managers are hired directly from other facilities or even out of college or universities whereas others are promoted from within. Usually those that are hired from outside the agency are required to attend in-services to address issues specific to that hospital or healthcare facility.

Career Track

An experienced human resources manager is able to move into several different management positions with the hospital or healthcare facility including department manager positions and even upper management.

This is largely dependent on training and previous experience. Some human resources managers may become self-employed specialized trainers and may provide training to various hospitals on issues such as labor laws or effective personnel management.
