Facilities Manager - Career Profile |
Career OverviewA facilities manager is usually one of a group of managers that work to keep the hospital or healthcare facility running smoothly on a day-to-day basis. Often the facilities manager may be the management team leader in small facilities or may considered a mid-level management position in larger hospitals.
The facilities manager may work with development, enhancement, troubleshooting, staffing and even maintenance of various departments within the hospital.
Depending on the role of the facilities manager they will need to have a good understanding of management principals, business administration, human resources and even mechanical and technology services. The facilities manager will need to have very effective interpersonal skills, have a good understanding of overall hospital or care facility goals and objectives, as well as understand the potential problems or difficulties that may arise on a day-to-day basis. He or she will work with a variety of upper management and front line staff to resolve problems so will require good interpersonal and communication skills.
In addition the facilities manager will need to be able to work on multiple projects at the same time and interact with vendors, contractors and other outside agencies to make sure that timelines are met for the various projects and repairs needed. When new facilities or expansions are being completed the facilities manager may work very closely with the various upper managers to ensure that the project is one budget and on time.

Career RequirementsThere are two ways to enter a career as a facilities manager. The first one is to have expensive experience in working as a low-level manager in a hospital or healthcare facility in a related area. This often is a relatively slow process as advancement without education is more difficult than being hired into a specific position due to education and experienced.
The second way to enter the facilities manager field is to have a Bachelors or Masters degree in a related field, plus some work experience in management or hospital or healthcare facility operation. The education is often in a field such as engineering, business administration or technology, with experience in the various departments within a similar facility.

Job OutlookThe job outlook for facilities manager is about average with growth for the rest of the economy. As facilities manager move into more advanced management positions or move to different or larger facilities there will be a steady demand for new candidates for the positions.
This trend is estimate to continue until 2014 by the United States Department of Labor. New long-term care facilities and expansions by hospitals will also increase the demand for both experienced and new facilities manager in the future.

Career TrackDepending on the size of the facility a facilities manager may move into upper management positions or may take more involved positions on development and design teams. In addition some facilities managers may move into private practices as consultants and trainers within the field of facilities management.

CompensationAs with most positions the salary is largely dependant on the size of the hospital or healthcare facility and the years of experience that the facilities manager has. The salary range is usually between $55,000 and $71,000 in most US hospitals or healthcare facilities but some privately run facilities may offer salaries in excess of $110,000.
