Administrative Director - Career Profile

Career Overview

The administrative director is responsible for specific duties within the department that they are working. Some of the general duties of an administrative director include working on developing working relations with other departments and agencies, fundraising or budget development, ensuring that the department is functioning in a way that is keeping with the hospital or healthcare facilities policies and guidelines, working with staff and assisting with staff development, overseeing junior staff, managing programs and developing effective and healthy working relationships within the staff.

The administrative director is responsible for keeping the department or facility running smoothly on a day-to-day basis. This means that the administrative director needs to have very effective interpersonal skills and should be able to work with a wide variety of people from patients to staff and even outside vendors and contractors.

The administrative director should have a good working knowledge of the facility as well as should be extremely aware of all local, state and federal regulations that may impact on decisions made in the operation of the healthcare facility.

The administrative director will be required to compile various reports and summaries and present them to management, hospital or facility boards of directors, or even present information about the facility to the public. The administrative director has to have good written communication skills and should be familiar with various types of computer programs, technologies and other mediums for making effective presentations and improving information exchange throughout the department or facility.

Multitasking, organization and time management skills are a must for an administrative director to be effective and efficient. They should also be well versed on hospital policy and current healthcare practices and management.



Career Requirements

Most administrative director positions require a graduate’s degree, a Masters degree, in either Business Administration, Healthcare Administration or a related field. In addition most also require some experience and a proven leadership ability within a management position in a healthcare related job.

Many administrative directors work for hospitals in medical information systems director or lower management positions and attend classes as well to gain both experience and training at the same time.

Job Outlook

As with most senior or upper level management positions there is a slowly increasing demand for individuals to fill jobs vacated by retiring individuals as well as to staff new hospitals and treatment facilities. The job turnover is very slow for the administrative director jobs; so new positions are not created as rapidly as they are in more entry level jobs within healthcare administrative positions.


Career Track

Depending on the background of the administrative director there are several options for career tracks within the healthcare field. Administrative directors are able to move into directorships in other aspects of healthcare such as plant management, human resources or staff development. In larger hospitals there may also be more senior level management positions that an administrative director would be very qualified to fill.

Some administrative directors may decide to return to teaching and may become professors and instructors in healthcare administration or business administration colleges or programs.



Compensation

An administrative director with less than three years of experience can anticipate earnings of between $63,000 and $72,000 per year. With more experience and administrative director often earns in excess of $87,000 per year, with those working in large hospitals and healthcare facilities earning more than those administrative directors working in smaller or government run facilities.
