Clinical Information Manager - Career Profile |
Career OverviewA clinical information manager has several responsibilities in the informatics field. They range from taking notes on patient and physician interactions to data entry onto patient charts.
An entry level clinical information manager is more likely to work directly in the area of patient care whereas a more experienced clinical information manager works more independently with managing the information in the files and data entry into required record keeping programs.
There are also clinical information managers that work directly in emergency room setting allowing the physician to be able to focus on patient care while the clinical information manager maintains the records and documents the various treatments provided to the patient. The clinical information manager is also responsible for coordinating data from other sources such as x-rays, additional test and procedures and entering this information into the chart for easy access by the doctor.
The clinical information manager must be able to work in a very chaotic environment and be able to keep up with rapid moves and changes in information. The emergency room clinical information managers need to be aware of basic medical procedures as well as be able to record and document the necessary information in a very short time period.
Excellent communication skills and good problem solving skills are needed to coordinate patient information during life saving procedures.

Job OutlookThe research completed in New Jersey at the Clara Maass Medical Center indicates that both the patient care levels and the number of patients that can be seen in the emergency room (ER) has increased since the implementation of the clinical information manager positions.
It is projected that other hospitals and clinics will begin using clinical information managers in both emergencies rooms and for general patient care as the research becomes more available on the effectiveness of the program. The increase in demands on ER’s as well as the growing number of hospitals in the country will lead to an increase in the demand for clinical information managers in the future.

Career TrackMost clinical information managers are working on experience within a hospital and so this is considered an entry level position. As clinical information managers become more common it is likely to assume that supervisory roles and even training and monitoring of clinical information manager employees will fall to senior clinical information managers.
In addition many nursing students, pre-med and informatician students use this as a way to develop an understanding of medical procedures and vocabulary. Many clinical information managers will go on to complete medical, informatician or nursing programs.
