A genetic research technician is responsible for helping a genetic scientist or research team to set up trials and experiments, prepare material, collect and analysis data as well as work with actual genetic material under the supervision of the genetic scientist.

Since there are many different types of genetic research is it possible to work for a hospital or research facility on human genetic research, in a animal or plant based research facility, or in a pharmaceutical or other private sector company.

Many genetic research assistants work to helping find cures for disease such a cancer and other terminal health conditions. They may also specialize in working with stem cells, children’s health conditions or even genetic engineering trials and facilities.

Job Outlook

The increasing demand for genetic research and information on the causes of disease and possible cures and treatments has increased the demand for genetic research technician across the country. Most genetic research technician will be employed in larger pharmaceutical companies and in research universities and hospitals in major centers.

Since the level of training required for genetic research technician is higher than some of the technician’s jobs in the biotechnology field there is usually a good demand for trained individuals in most major hospitals and research facilities.

Career Track

Many genetic research technicians continue to higher levels of training and become Genetic Research Assistants or even complete their PhD training and become research scientists. Often there are management options available in both private and governmental agencies for genetic research technicians with experience in lab management and research design.

Some genetic research technicians specialize in one field such as DNA processing, cancer research, or even stem cell development. These genetic research technicians may have more options to move into higher level team based management with additional training and experience.

Compensation

In large pharmaceutical companies and private research facilities the wages for a genetic research technician often range between $900-$1000 dollars per week, with government and smaller research facilities ranging between $700-$800 dollars per week.
