If you are interested in getting into nursing informatics, you might consider getting certification or education in it. Here are ten tips on how to find the right nursing informatics program for you.
- Decide what kind of program best suits your needs. Do you need an advanced degree, certification or continuing education? To decide that you’ll need to consider your career goals and figure out which type of program will best support those goals.
- Decide if you want professional certification. Professional certification is not education-dependent. Professional certification validates your knowledge and skill in a certain area of nursing. If you decide professional certification will meet your needs, you’ll want to choose a certification study program to help you prepare for the exams.
- Decide what kind of continuing education you need. Continuing education is intended to keep your skills and knowledge up to date. It is not comprehensive. You might consider taking a nursing informatics course or two at a local nursing college if you need fundamental information. You can update yourself by going to meetings and conferences and by reading journals.
- If you choose graduate school, do you need to get an MSc or a PhD? Some schools also offer graduate or post-graduate certificates in nursing informatics. If you plan to work in the field of nursing informatics, you may choose to get an MSN. If you plan to teach or do research, you probably need a PhD.
- Do you prefer a traditional program or non-traditional? There is something to be said for attending a traditional graduate program in nursing informatics. If you plan to teach, especially, you’ll experience academia best in a traditional program. Non-traditional programs are available, too, and they are more flexible.
- What are the acceptance requirements? And do you have them? You may need to take some classes in computer science or meet some other requirements before you can get into some nursing informatics programs. Your decision will be affected by how much work you have to do before you get accepted.
- Cost. Of course, you will compare costs between programs. Cost may be the deciding factor in whether or not you pursue graduate school, or decide on professional certification instead.
- Full or Part time. Some nursing informatics require full time attendance; some can be completed over a longer period of time by going to school part time.
- Is it a collaborative program? Nursing informatics is, by its very nature, a collaborative profession. Does the program you are evaluating use a collaborative model, or does it use a nursing-only model? You’ll need to decide which model is the best on for you and your career goals.
- Does it offer specialization? You may want to specialize in educational nursing informatics or in clinical nursing informatics. Find out what the scope of the program is, and if it allows you to specialize.
Whether you are looking for continuing education or for a PhD program, knowing what your career goals are is the key to choosing the right program. When you know your career goals, you can more easily find the program that will get you where you want to go.
