Ten Essential Skills for a Radiology Technician |
We look at ten of the most essential skills that a radiology technician would need to have a great career.
|
Radiology technicians work with highly sensitive equipment, deal with patients and have to have a variety of very specific skills. It’s an excellent career choice for people who enjoy making a difference and have the right set of skills. Here are the main skills that are essential for a radiology technician:
1. Mechanical aptitude. Radiology techs work with high-end, cutting edge diagnostic equipment. They need to be able to not only use the equipment but understand enough about its workings that they can tell if its not functioning properly.
2. Manual dexterity. Technicians are responsible for the maintenance of the equipment they use, as well as sometimes very sensitive calibrations needed to use the machines.
3. Physical skills. A radiology tech must be able to assist patients, which can involved bending, stooping and lifting. Some of the machinery used in radiology involves moving large pieces of equipment. A radiology tech must be physically able to fulfill every aspect of the job.
4. Empathy. Radiologic technicians spend their days working with people who are often anxious, frightened or in pain. They’re worried about the results of their tests and scared of the sometimes intimidating machines. A good tech is sympathetic, understanding and honest with patients.
5. Verbal communication skills. Radiology techs have to instruct patients in a clear, calm manner on how to stand or sit, how to hold themselves in position or twist to the left or right, in order to get a clear image. Therefore, they must be able to explain what they need in a simple, concise, easy-to-understand manner.
6. Flexibility. Every day is different for a radiologic technician, and you’ll need to be able to adapt to whatever the day brings, and maintain a calm, supportive attitude towards patients even when the day is stressful for you and the rest of the heath care team.
7. Reading and writing skills. During the course of the job, you’ll need to read requisitions from doctors for specific tests and the information pertaining to the results of those tests, as well as emails, memos, newsletters, manuals, and medical and scientific journals. You’ll also need to write memos, instructions and e-mail messages, record information pertaining to test results, and possibly even write for newsletters and professional journals.
8. Leadership skills. Radiologists often consult with doctors about a patient’s care, having an active role in the diagnosis and treatment of the patient. The ability to take a leading role in patient care is essential in this field.
9. Ability to follow precise instructions. The tests being performed on patients were carefully ordered by the doctor for a reason. If you don't follow the doctor's instructions to the letter, you could be a weak link in the health care chain and contribute to all sorts of problems.
10. Ability to follow safety precautions. Radiology work can be dangerous at times, and your ability to protect yourself and the others in your lab from dangerous radiation problems is essential.
Radiologists interpret X-ray images, as well as ultrasound, MRI, CT, and they perform a wide range of other imaging procedures. If they’ve undergone additional specialized training, radiologists also interpret nuclear medicine tests. Radiology is a growing field that always has openings for recent graduates. Radiologists are, in essence, physicians specializing in the branch of medical science that uses radiation in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. It’s an excellent field for people who are smart, committed and enjoy helping others.
