While nurses and doctors might be the most recognisable careers in the healthcare sector, there are other careers options available for those seeking to gain a career in the healthcare sector without having to go the route of a doctor or nurse.
These career options are collectively know as the allied health professions, of which there are about 100 and accounts for 60 percent of the jobs available in the US healthcare sector, which amounts to about 2 million workers. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), some of the allied health professions account for half of the top 30 percent of fastest growing jobs through to 2010.
Allied Health professionals work hand in hand with physicians and other members of the health care team to provide services in the identification, diagnosis and treatment of diseases and disabilities. They also provide most of the face to face interactions between patient and the health care providers. Allied Health Care jobs include laboratory technicians, radiologic technologists, physical and occupational therapists and dietitians.
There has never been a better time to get into the allied health profession as the demand for allied health professionals increases because of the US’ aging population, coupled with the fact over the last few years enrollment in training programs have fallen.
